Building Your Course

The Blackboard environment allows you to easily navigate, provide data, edit items, and change options that affect how users interact with the interface.  It is highly customizable and has many different tools.  

Below you can find tutorials on some of the many tools available through Blackboard.  If you need further help or information on the Blackboard tools, please contact your instructional designer.


Content Editor

The content editor allows you to add and format text, insert equations and hyperlinks, tables, and attach different types of files to create content. The editor appears throughout the system as the default editor.

  • Video Everywhere- using the content editor, you can record a video using a webcam and have it seamlessly embedded in course materials, interactions, and feedback.  



Mashups allow you to include content in an online course that is from an external website. The following types of mashups are available:

  • NBC Learn: a tool that allows faculty to easily embed NBC News content into your course.

  • Flickr Photo: a site for viewing and sharing images

  • SlideShare: site for viewing and sharing PowerPoint presentations, Word documents, or Adobe PDF Portfolios

  • YouTube: a site for viewing and sharing online videos

  • Blackboard xpLor is a global learning object repository that enables instructors to easily author, copyright, share, and discover rich educational materials. With xpLor instructors can:

  • Create or upload content.

  • Protect content.

  • Share content with other users and institutions as determined by specific parameters and sharing filters.

  • Search for content according to grade level, subject matter, standards, and other criteria.

You can create course areas to organize and present content in an organized and engaging way.

Publisher Integrations

Many academic publishers have partnered with Blackboard to integrate their resources and services. Each vendor deploys content differently, but the results are similar. In most cases, users will have access to digital materials and curriculum tools along with gradebook integration and automatic sign-on.  Learn more.


The course calendar  allows faculty to provide students with dates for course-related events.  Users can personalize their calendar view and sync dates with their favorite external calendar. View Blackboard’s video tutorial on how to use the course calendar.

Date Management

With the Date Management tool, instructors can view all content and tool due and availability dates in one place. Spring 2015

Below you can find tutorials on some of the ways you and your learners can communicate and collaborate through Blackboard.  If you need further help or information on any of the Blackboard tools, please contact your instructional designer. 

  • Announcements. You can use the announcements tool to welcome students and post course news and reminders. In a web-enhanced course, you can use announcements for notifying students about schedule changes and class cancellations. In general, try to post announcements regularly. For example, use announcements to post the course activities and performance expectations for each week, unit, or module. Watch how to create an announcement.

  • Email. The email tool allows you to send email to other people in your course without launching an external email program. Watch how to send an email  

  • Course Messages. Course messages are private, text-based communication that occur within your course.  Although course messages are similar to email, you must be logged in to a course to read and send course messages. Watch how to send a course message.


Discussion boards

The most common form of interaction in an online course is through the discussion board using forums established by the instructor. You can observe students demonstrating their grasp of the material, exchange ideas, debate topics, ask questions, and work in groups. You can moderate, evaluate, and grade discussion posts.


Journals, Wikis, and Blogs

Journals are private, self-reflective spaces where students post thoughts on experiences or course topics. Journal assignments help students create meaning and internalize learning as they engage in personalized one-on-one conversations with the instructor.  Watch how to create a journal

Blogs are another medium for reflective learning. Students can display their research, critical thinking skills, and communication abilities through a series of commentaries meant for course-wide consumption and comment. Watch how to create a blog

Wikis allow students to collaborate by creating new content or editing existing content as well as providing comments.  Unlike a blog, which is more personal, wikis enable students to build upon each other students' contributions and refine their final products. Watch creating and managing wikis

Fall 2014

Below you can find tutorials on some of the ways you can use assignments, quizzes, tests, and exams to assess your learners in Blackboard.  If you need further help or information on any of the Blackboard tools, please contact your instructional designer.


A rubric is a scoring and feedback tool that lists levels of quality and point values for each performance criteria. Rubrics help students know what is expected of them and receive a detailed evaluation with informative feedback rather than just a score. Rubrics can be attached to any gradable item in Blackboard. You can use the assignments tool to present a variety of learning activities to students allowing them to view and submit assignments from one location. Assignments can be delivered to each student individually or as collaborative work for groups of students.  Inline grading allows instructors to view student-submitted assignments "inline," in the web browser. Annotation tools are available which enables instructors to provide feedback including comments, highlights, and even drawings directly on the document.  Watch inline grading for assignments.


Turnitin is an originality checking and plagiarism prevention service that encourages best practices for using and citing other people’s written material. Turnitin allows faculty to manage the process of submitting and tracking student submitted papers along with an interface to provide feedback to students.  Learn more about Turnitin.

Quizzes, Tests, and Exams

You can use tests and surveys to measure student knowledge, gauge progress, and gather information from students. Tests and surveys are created and deploy within a course area.


Item analysis is used to statistically measure the effectiveness of test questions. Watch item analysis.

Proctored Exams

Should a professor elect to hold proctored exams, the students are entitled to utilizing the services of a proctoring center or ProctorU.  Directions for utilizing these options are available in your FIU Online course and should be made available accordingly.  Learn more about ProctorU

The Retention Center

The Retention Center allows instructors to dig deep into a student's performance and set customizable alerts to easily identify at-risk students.  Watch using the retention center.

The Performance Dashboard

The Performance Dashboard provides a quick view of student activity such as last access and the number of times each student posted to the discussion board. Watch using the performance dashboard.


The Achievements tool allows instructors to designate criteria for issuing rewards to students in the form of both badges and certificates. Students can view the requirements to obtain the reward along with which awards they have received.  To learn more, see Achievements.

Course Reports

Course reports allow instructors to get a detailed picture of student activity in their course. Details include which students are accessing your course, when, and for how long. To learn more, see Course Reports.

The Grade Center

The Grade Center allows you to record data, calculate grades, and monitor student progress. In the Grade Center, you can provide and manage your students' grades for assignments, tests, discussion posts, journals, blogs, and wikis, and for ungraded items, such as surveys or self-tests.
